Open-weight vs closed AI models: how to choose

Choose around your requirements rather than treating either approach as automatically superior.
Open-weight systems
Downloadable weights can enable self-hosting and customisation, subject to the licence. Hardware, operations and security become part of the cost. Open weights do not necessarily mean open source or unrestricted commercial use.
Closed-weight systems
Hosted access can simplify deployment, while keeping you dependent on provider pricing, availability, usage limits and data terms. Check the service agreement for your workload.
Overall best versus best for you
