Perplexity for research: turn citations into a decision, not blind confidence
Our Tool of the Day is Perplexity for source-led research. It is worth considering when the task begins with finding and comparing information. The useful output is a shortlist of claims you can check, rather than a polished answer you must trust.
Documented strengths
Perplexity describes web answers with inline citations, deeper research, and paid access to model selection, files and connected apps. Its Computer feature extends into multi-step work. The official hub lists Pro at US$20 monthly or US$200 annually. The pricing page displays an annual-billing equivalent of about US$17 per month; it is not a US$17 month-to-month offer. A practical 20-minute workflow
- Define the decision. For example: choose a presentation tool for three colleagues who need editable exports and a fixed monthly budget.
- Set evidence rules. Ask for official pricing and documentation, dates checked, a link for every material claim, and a separate list of unknowns.
- Compare the same units. Separate per-seat costs from team costs and monthly billing from annual commitments.
- Open the sources. Check whether each source actually supports the adjacent claim. Follow through to the original document when an answer cites commentary.
- Make a small trial decision. Test one representative output before buying an annual plan or connecting a sensitive workspace.
Where it can disappoint

A convincing comparison can omit an important restriction, mix publication dates with event dates, or compare different product tiers. Asking for sources is only the first step.
